Black Squirrels are… rare? Not in CNY!

Scrolling through my news feed I came across an article “Mystery Solved: Scientists Have Figured Out Why Some Squirrels Are Black” The article said how rare the black squirrel is…

Spoiler alert- they’re actually a gray squirrel with a faulty gene from breeding with a fox squirrel that makes their fur darker.  A fox squirrel is not a red squirrel (those little thieving bastards lol).  According to the internet a fox squirrel is the biggest North American Tree Squirrel.  I’ve lived in CNY for my entire life.  I’ve never seen a fox squirrel.  Ever.  But damn, I’ve seen black squirrels!  They’re my favorite!  Their gorgeous sable coats (we always called them sable squirrels growing up).  And they’re NOT rare in CNY.  In fact, on any given afternoon looking out the back window you can see at least half a dozen of these little dudes.  Have you noticed your squirrels’ coats?
