How’s Your Thumb? Green? The Touch of Death?

It’s Shannon… I have an idyllic vision of myself growing my own foods, canning and prepping them, and having nice neat rows in a cabinet in the basement…. (insert loud, hysterical laughter here).  There are a few problems with my fantasy: I don’t like dirt or bugs… or most vegetables. And, follow through is not my strong point.

So when I share pictures of my gardening success please understand this shelf garden was 10 years in the making.  I tried it outside, but once bugs moved in and I had to worry about them crawling on me as I picked tomatoes I wasn’t going to eat (yuck)… I lost the passion for gardening.  A few years in a row.  I really wanted to enjoy it and thought if I could have some success I would.  I never did.

Then I tried a container garden on the deck.  I thought it would be less dirt and easier to control.  It was… until those jerk squirrels ruined it and dug everything up one night and left a huge mess.  Passion gone again.

Last year I wanted to try again… you know, like everyone else.  So I didn’t.  But this year… oh yeah.  I bought a $20 grow light.  I lined a shelf in my big closet with plastic.  I bought a couple of planters, a bag of dirt, and some starter plants… and I planted (with gloves on).  I set timers for my light, I fertilized and watered…

and I am seeing EARLY PROGRESS!!! DO YOU SEE MY STRAWBERRY?!?!?!

AND MY TEENY TINY TOMATOES? Babies!  Just babies

Don’t look at my broccoli… but my spinach and romaine look good!

So I’m pretty sure we’ll be self sustaining here by September.  Probably have to start booking my farmers market booth soon.
